Reflections on Past Times

With this weekend being the start of this years college football season and seeing all the excitement and joy surrounding Columbus it brought back memories of last fall. Ohio State football games are very popular in Columbus, whether it be at the game or at a local bar watching the game with hundreds of fans. I personally don't necessarily root for Ohio State but I do enjoy going down and tailgating with friends and I enjoy the whole atmosphere that surround these games. Yesterday in particular was the first home game of this season. I didn't attend tailgating or the game due to prior commitments but I know what it would have been like. The things I know about the festivities and what not only help me confirm that there is a missing connection between Campus and Short North. Last night was also the monthly gallery hop event in the Short North, basically all the art gallery open their doors and allow people to come in, enjoy some wine and look at local art. This monthly event always has a great turnout and is always busy. Between gallery hop and Ohio State Football games these two areas are constantly filled with people during these times. How can I use this to incorporate into my plans for the "connection" area? What is missing, why don't people feel a need or want to stop in this area? It's like the middle man between point A and B. This needs to change, but HOW?

  1. Wow, I have no understanding of Ohio or the issues specific to what you are describing, but I find the two activities that you described in this post very interesting... could they be any further apart not only by the missing "connection" but by the activity itself. College football and tailgating would seem to be a very different function and crowd to the idea of wine tasting and art openings. Based on this entry it almost seems that the missing connection is more of a needed TRANSITION than a place of function.

  2. Interesting comment Chris. I agree about the transition that is also missing. And I guess I understand Ohio and the issues. Honestly maybe the word I was thinking instead of connection was transition and I couldn't figure that out until now. I agree about the transition as far as people where the campus activities are all ages but mainly 18+ whereas the Short North Art District is more of a 21-45ish range. There is a missing transition/connection to these two areas that I will eventually explore further in people studies that relate how they act to what area they are in. I think the use of CONNECTION and TRANSITION can both play a very important role in my concept. Thanks for the comment.

  3. Wow Nick, that age thing leads me into more transition thought... what happens during the time that you are 18+ (concerned with college sports), and the 21-45 ish (consumed by the finer things) that makes us "grow up"? I think if you could buckle down on the idea of becoming "a responsible adult" then you may be able to understand more about what is needed as a connector/transition for the (as Dave Matthew's said) Space Between!
